PRE 1868 H & J SANGSTER Red Fixed Globe RAILROAD LANTERN
The Goble is a flash red fixed globe made by Flint Glass Co. making it prior to 1868
Font was patented by H & J Sangsters in 1851
The lantern does have a cage to protect the globe.
It is a Whale oil lantern made of brass.
Unfortunately no RR embossed on globe.
The globe is painted red on the inside rather than manufactured using red glass. Early red globes were "flashed", meaning that a red coating was applied (bonded) to clear glass. This was done because the quality of solid red glass was not up to the standards needed for railroad service. Eventually technology improvements around the turn of the century led to solid red glass globes of high quality, and these superseded flashed globes. One way of identifying flashed globes is to examine the rims where chips may reveal clear glass underneath the red coating.
Lantern base does have a small stress crack as show in photo.
Lantern measures: Approx. 12" to top of lantern, not including bale.
With bale approx. 18"
Though I do believe the lantern is Canadian and most likely used prior to the completion of Canada's first transcontinental railroad, on November 7, 1885,
Unfortunately the gentleman who owned the lantern is currently in a nursing home and suffers from dementia and could not recall any pertinent information about the lantern.
The Lantern will be packed and shipped by UPS Only. UPS is the only provider that will insure the lantern for breakage. Approximate cost for shipping is $85.00. USD
Price is $675.00 USD + Shipping
